Description
1955 Lincoln Wheat Cent. Double Die Obverse 1c, CACG MS62BN CAC, FS-101
This Choice 1955 doubled die obverse cent displays thoroughly lustrous surfaces with some copper-red undertones beneath glistening plum and olive-brown toning. There are no major abrasions, and eye appeal far exceeds expectations for the grade. Doubling on the date, LIBERTY, and IN GOD WE TRUST is as bold as can be. There are a few small flecks and carbon spots on each side. Undeniably a high-end example.
The 1955 Double Die Obverse cent probably ranks as the single most celebrated doubled die error of the 20th century, the subject of innumerable articles since the time it was minted. The error was caused by a change in the positioning of the hub with respect to the die after the die had already received at least one impression from the hub. This ordinarily would have resulted in the obverse die being rejected from use, but the mint workers responsible for quality control failed to notice the error until several thousand impressions had already been made. Most survivors had already entered into the channels of commerce before the collecting community was fully aware of the variety’s existence. Hence mint state example are somewhat rare.
