Description

A desirable and affordable Roman Gold proof Quarter Eagle. At first glance, this issue appears to have flawless features. The brighter luster of the Roman Gold finish is certainly apparent on this coin and the surfaces display rich reddish patina that is lovely indeed. The only flaws that can be found upon close inspection are some discreet hairlines on the obverse and reverse. To add to the coin’s desirability, it is approved by CAC.

The Roman Gold finish is quite unlike any other proof finish in U.S. coinage, and it is limited to only two years, 1909 and 1910, making these pieces even more desirable to advanced gold collectors. The mintages for proof gold struck in 1910 were extraordinarily high–either the figures were in error or the vast majority of the coins struck were later melted. The official mintage for the 1910 Quarter Eagle was a whopping 682 proofs. However, survivors most likely number only 75-100 pieces, indicative of a much smaller mintage than the official one.
