Description
1873 Liberty Seated Dollar With Motto $1, CACG MS64+ CAC
Both sides of this near-Gem Seated half dollar exhibit subdued gold toning with splashes of ebony over its silver-gray surfaces and are virtually free of significant contact marks. The design elements are nicely struck bold and the eye appeal is excellent.
The year 1873 marked the end of the Seated Liberty dollar and the beginning of the Trade dollar, by way of the “Crime of ’73.” In addition, the year of 1873 has a peculiar appeal to numismatists, most notably “Mr. 1873,” Harry X Boosel and is home to the largest proof set ever issued by the US Mint, which includes 15 pieces. The Seated dollars of 1873 were all of the Closed 3 date variety. The issue is scarce in Mint State, as large numbers of circulation strikes and proofs were melted. Much of the 293,000-piece mintage was melted in July 1873 (David Bowers, 2006).
